Ashtabula, OH Building Inspector

Position Overview:

The Building Inspector is responsible for performing inspections and plan reviews to ensure compliance with applicable state and local building, electrical, and safety codes. The exact duties will vary based on the inspector's certifications, and may include work in residential, commercial, or industrial construction projects. This role works closely with contractors, property owners, and design professionals to promote safe, code-compliant construction in Ashtabula County.

Ideal Candidate:

A skilled trades professional (carpentry, electrical, HVAC, etc.) who may or may not yet hold Ohio Board of Building Standards (OBBS) certifications but is able to obtain them after hire. We're looking for someone with practical construction knowledge, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with the public and industry professionals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field inspections of construction projects to verify compliance with the Ohio Building Code, Residential Code of Ohio, National Electric Code, and other applicable regulations.
  • Review plans, blueprints, specifications, and supporting documentation for code compliance.
  • Identify and document code violations, recommending corrective actions as necessary.
  • Communicate inspection results and code requirements to contractors, architects, engineers, and property owners.
  • Issue permits, approvals, and certificates as authorized; issue stop work orders when warranted.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public, contractors, and government officials, providing accurate information and regulatory guidance.
  • Maintain accurate records, inspection reports, and documentation in accordance with department policies.
  • Keep current with code changes and maintain required licensure and certifications.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief Building Official.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain certification from the Ohio Board of Building Standards (OBBS)
  • Valid State of Ohio driver's license and ability to maintain insurability under the County's vehicle insurance policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Electrical license or related trade experience.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and building codes.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting plans and specifications.

Compensation:

  • $62,400-74,880 annually based on experience
